Mr. Hannibal Lecter sat at his table at the medical school library reading his copy of “Dante’s Inferno”. True, he had to take his Gross Anatomy examination in less than 2 hours, but he had read his copy of “Gray’s Anatomy” from cover to cover and was not concerned. This was leisure time he had decided to fill with some exquisite text.

Medicine was not Mr. Lecter’s first choice as a profession. He was a very fine gourmet and a career in the culinary arts was what he had intended. He was a gifted pianist and also had felt a strong calling to the world of performance, however, as the adopted son of a surgeon, there was little doubt of the direction that his life would take.

He would be choosing a specialty next year and there were several possibilities. He considered Cardiology, but the thought of dealing with only one major organ bored him. He had no interest in children, so Pediatrics was out. He had considered Internal Medicine, but it was his recent course in Abnormal Psychology that had him seriously considering a career in Psychiatry.

Hannibal didn’t hear the second year student walk up to him and slightly jerked when he heard her say, "Is this seat taken?”

“Why, no, feel free,” Hannibal responded as she sat down and placed her books on the available seat next to her. Hannibal couldn’t help but notice that she smelled of Gardenias..perhaps it was her bubble bath or maybe it was her shampoo.

He continued reading until she asked him “Second or third year?”

“Third," he answered politely, looking up and trying not to lose his place.

“I’ve seen you before,” she continued. “I think it was the day we had the lecture on surgical addiction”.

“I seem to remember you as well”, Hannibal responded. He did remember her…she sat two rows in front of him and kept playing with her hair.
